Bicheno was initially established at the turn of the 19th century with the name Waubs Boat Harbour, a whaling centre making its living from the rich waters and the nearby migration of humpback whales. It had been renamed Bicheno after James Ebenezer Bicheno in 1854 when coal was discovered in the region, however town was quickly abandoned when the miners all left to follow along with the gold rush.
